Carlo Ancelotti Makes Real Madrid History With Victory Over Chelsea
Carlo Ancelotti made Real Madrid history on Wednesday with a 2-0 Champions League victory over Chelsea, meaning he has won more games in the competition than any other in the club’s history.
The quarter-final first leg at the Bernabeu, sealed by goals in either half from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio, was Ancelotti’s 35th Champions League win in charge of Los Blancos.
That now puts the Italian one ahead of Vicente del Bosque, whose record of 34 Ancelotti had equalled in the previous round when Real beat Liverpool 1-0 at the Bernabeu.
Ancelotti’s 35 Champions League wins with Real have come over two successful spells at the club, the first resulting in the elusive Decima in 2014 and the second yielding last season’s continental triumph – Real’s 14th European title in total.
Between his first and second spells at the club, there were six years in which Ancelotti took jobs at Bayern Munich, Napoli and Everton. He left the latter in 2021 when Real offered him his old job back.
Del Bosque similarly won two Champions League titles with Real, doing so in 2000 and 2002. The Spaniard, who later guided Spain to World Cup and European Championship glory, was in charge for four years from 1999 until 2003, but had been at the Bernabeu for most of his life until that departure after 17 years as a player and many more as a youth and reserve coach.
Ancelotti was already a two-time Champions League winning coach before he arrived in Madrid for the first time in 2013, having twice steered AC Milan to victory – in 2003 and 2007.
