Christophe Galtier Confirms PSG In Talks With Lionel Messi Over Contract Renewal

Paris Saint-Germain manager Christophe Galtier has given an update on the contract situation of his forward Lionel Messi.

The 35-year-old attacker is in the final year of his contract at the club and could leave for free this summer. The club wants to keep him but on different terms.

There have been rumours about a return to Barcelona, but the Catalan club’s financial situation means that any deal for Messi will be almost impossible.

Major League Soccer (MLS) club Inter Miami are interested in the Argentine forward, and they could provide a destination for him if he leaves.

However, Messi and PSG’s management are discussing a new deal Galtier confirmed in his press conference ahead of their Ligue 1 clash against Rennes.

Speaking to L’Equipe, Galtier said: “I know that Leo, the football management, and the president (Nasser Al Khelaifi) talk a lot to each other. If he is to stay, it will be according to the desires of all parties.”

The former LOSC Lille and OGC Nice manager also praised Messi’s performance and behaviour.

“He is happy in the dressing room,” the 56-year-old said. “He has scored 18 goals and registered 17 assists. Messi was decisive very often. He is an important player through his behaviour in the dressing room.”

Messi is doubtful for the Rennes clash after pulling out of training yesterday. PSG have not confirmed whether the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner suffered an injury.

If he does play, he will likely face a hostile atmosphere with PSG ultras planning to whistle him. They see him as one of the reasons for their Champions League round of 16 exit against Bayern Munich.

Les Parisiens have also crashed out of other domestic cup competitions. Their only chance for silverware is the league, where they currently lead rivals Marseille with ten points.

They hope for three more points on Sunday against Bruno Genesio’s side to keep up their title charge.
