David De Gea Aware He Will Be Number 2 Next Season If He Stays At Man United
David de Gea is aware that he will no longer be first-choice goalkeeper at Manchester United if he signs an extension to remain with the club next season.
De Gea’s current contract is set to expire on Friday and there has been no agreement reached on an extension.
United had been keen to re-sign the Spaniard on reduced terms, but the expectation is now that De Gea will depart as a free agent after 12 years at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag discussed a new deal for De Gea following the club’s final Premier League fixture of the season against Fulham, but an unconvincing performance in the FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City – in which the goalkeeper was at fault for Ilkay Gundogan’s second goal and poor with his distribution – has perhaps prompted a rethink ahead of next season
The Daily Mail are reporting that De Gea is aware that he will no longer be first-choice should he sign a new deal as United look to bring in a goalkeeper who is more comfortable in possession.
The Red Devils have held talks with Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana and there appears to be little room for the potential €50m addition of the Cameroon international and De Gea in the squad next season.
Ten Hag worked alongside Onana at former club Ajax and the 27-year-old impressed as Inter Milan reached the Champions League final last season.
Should De Gea depart, he will do so having made 545 appearances for the club in all competitions and as a joint-record four-time winner of the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award.
