West Ham United boss David Moyes still wants to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez despite Arsenal holding talks over a potential deal.
West Ham were keen to sign Nunez in January and it looked like they may actually get a deal done.
Sky Sports reported that West Ham actually agreed a fee to sign Nunez before the January deadline.
In the end, no deal was done and Nunez has gone to another level since West Ham missed out.
Now one of the most in-demand strikers in Europe, Nunez has racked up a ridiculous 33 goals in 39 games for Benfica this season.
The 22-year-old Uruguayan seems primed for a big move but David Moyes isn’t backing away.
The Express claim that West Ham boss Moyes still wants to sign Nunez, holding out hope that the Hammers can somehow win this race.
That report claims that Benfica’s £67million asking price may be out of West Ham’s range.
Yet if you believe ESPN, they claim that Benfica now won’t sell Nunez for anything less than £109million.
£67million is likely out of West Ham’s price range, never mind £109million.
West Ham will be appealing to many players this summer after their Europa League heroics but it feels like the ship has sailed on Nunez joining.
Nunez could still end up in London though.
Portuguese newspaper Record have reported that Arsenal have held talks to try and convince Nunez to arrive at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal will likely have more money to spend than West Ham this summer and appear to be more likely to sign Nunez.
There is interest from pretty much every big European club now, and whilst Moyes may still like Nunez, it may be time to give up hope of him joining West Ham.
Michail Antonio still needs help in attack, but West Ham will likely need to look elsewhere.
