DELIGTH FOR ARSENAL AS MAJOR MIDFILDER SIGN CONTRACT EXTENSION TO STAY IN THE CLUB

El Neny emerged as a key player for Mikel Arteta, especially towards the end of the 2021/22 season

Arsenal midfielder Mohammed Elneny has signed a new short term deal to remain at the club.

The 29-year old was set to become a free agent in the summer, but the Gunners have decided to retain his services for one more year.

Elneny’s new one-year deal has the option to extend it for 12 months

Since joining Arsenal from FC Basel in 2015, El Neny has made 147 appearances for the club. “I love this club and I feel like part of this family,” he said after signing the extension.

“I want to continue at this amazing club, in this amazing family, and I’m very happy and very excited for the future.”

The Egyptian is also favoured by Mikel Arteta, who says he brings the much-needed energy at the heart of the Arsenal midfield.

“Mo is a really important part of the team,” said Arteta. “He is loved by everyone.” Arteta said as quoted by BBC.

“He’s an important player for us on and off the pitch, a real role model to our younger players and I’m delighted he’s staying.”

In his 147 appearances for the club, El Neny has managed to notch in five goals from midfield while also registering 10 assists across all competitions.

He emerged as Arsenal’s most consistent player in the final stages of the just concluded season as he made seven consecutive starts for Mikel Arteta’s side in the league following an injury to Thomas Partey.

The new contract means Arsenal forwards Eddie Nketiah and Alxandre Lacazette are the only two Gunners who are yet to have their deals renewed and are set to become free agents in June.
