Todd Boehly: Chelsea Is A ‘Long-Term Project’ And Backs Them To ‘Figure It Out’ Following Woeful Season

Todd Boehly says Chelsea is a ‘long-term project’ and has backed the club to ‘figure it out’ following a woeful season at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are 12th in the Premier League table and have suffered six consecutive defeats in all competitions since Frank Lampard’s return to the club as interim manager.

It has been a disastrous campaign for Chelsea, who are heading towards the club’s lowest league finish in almost three decades despite a record-breaking season of spending. Boehly has spent almost £600m on new signings across the past two transfer windows, but Chelsea have struggled to mould an expensively assembled squad into a winning team under a succession of managers.

Boehly has sacked both Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter during the current campaign and the west Londoners are currently conducting a search for their next permanent head coach, with Mauricio Pochettino the favourite to take charge ahead of next season.

The American owner has opened up on the club’s challenging campaign and insists the Blues’ board ‘are going to figure it out’.

“Our view though was that this is a long-term project and we are committed to the long-term,” he said at the Milken Institute conference on Wednesday, as per The Athletic.

“We very much believe that we are going to figure it out. We’ve got the best league in the world, we’ve got what I think is the top city in the world and we’ve got an unbelievable location in the top city in the world.”

“There’s a market for top players in every country in the world and each one of those markets is different.

“You have the Portuguese market, the French market, the English market so (you have) the ability to go to these markets. Then of course you have to build a team, your coach is the conductor of the team.”

Boehly admits he has learned ‘a lot’ since taking ownership of Chelsea last year and insists he is determined to ‘win’ and meet the demands of the club’s supporters.

“There is a lot that we have learned about the different markets, the global aspect of it all,” he added. “The fans are demanding. They want to win and we get that, we want to win.”
