Erik Ten Hag Expects Raphael Varane Return For FA Cup Final Clash With Man City

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane suffered an injury during his side’s 2-2 clash with Sevilla in the Europa League 11 days ago.

United announced the player was out for weeks but would return for the season’s final games.

His manager, Erik ten Hag, expects him to be back for their FA Cup final clash against Manchester City on June 3.

United bounced back from a disappointing 3-0 second-leg loss to Sevilla in Spain by booking their place in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

They played out a 0-0 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion before winning on penalties to book a date against their city rivals.

United have received a boost with the prospect of Raphael Varane being fit for that encounter.

When asked about the Frenchman’s availability for the game, Ten Hag said (via Man Utd’s website): “I think so, yeah. Varane, for the cup final, he can return.”

Rumours were swirling that the former Real Madrid defender would be out of action until next season. Ten Hag has eased those fears.

Varane was a massive miss for United in the second-leg Europa League loss to the Andalusians. Captain Harry Maguire had a day to forget, and so did David De Gea.

United’s defence has been depleted by injuries, with Lisandro Martinez also out of action.

Ten Hag has played left-back Luke Shaw as a centre-back, and the 27-year-old is enjoying the experience.

Considering the injuries and Maguire’s form/luck, the manager might continue with the formula.

Apart from the FA Cup final, the Red Devils are still fighting for third position in the league.

Newcastle United’s 6-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur helped the Magpies up to third, but United have played a game less.

Man Utd face a demoralised Tottenham this Thursday, although they will beware of the new manager effect.

Spurs have sacked interim boss Cristian Stellini after the loss at St James’ Park. Ryan Mason will take charge until the end of the season as they find a new permanent manager.
