FORMER ORLANDO PIRATES FORWARD SAYS KAIZER CHIEFS GREAT DOCTOR KHUMALO WOULD STRUGGLE IN TODAY’S PSL
A former Orlando Pirates player in the form of Reason Chiloane has made a bold claim likely to cause an uproar among local football fans.
Former Orlando Pirates striker Reason Chiloane is of the opinion that if Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs legend was a player from the current generation, he’d struggle in the Premier Soccer League.
The 39-year-old pointed to the evolution of the local game because of a strong European influence negatively as the reason for his outlook.
He also said that from a physical structure point of view, Khumalo and other renowned players from the early days of the PSL would not cut it today.
He said to Kick Off…
“A lot has changed in our football and there’s nothing we can do we just need to accept, Kasi football no longer works these days. I mean gone are those days where you will see the flair, it’s no longer there we now play like Europeans.
“We had to adopt that style, and there is nothing we can do if you bring in Kasi football you can’t make it. If it was up to me we were supposed to stick to our culture. Doctor wouldn’t have made it if he played in this modern football era.”
Pointing to ’16V’s’ legendary style of play, Chiloane added…
“His style of play would not be favourable to most coaches. “I don’t think he would have become the brand he is today. He was too slow, dribbling…I don’t think even coaches would have shown an interest in him.
“But back then the style suited him, you could play while you were fat those days, Shakes Kungwane had a big tummy but played for a big team. The likes of Gavin Lane, they played, but bring someone with that body structure right now… can he make it?”
According to Transfermarkt, the 39-year-old Chiloane also represented Ga-Rankuwa United, Thanda Royal Zulu, African Warriors, Attlie FC and FC A.K. during his career. Soccer Laduma reported that he retired in November 2016 to focus on his coaching career.
