Gerard Romero: Barcelona Have Offered Mateu Alemany A New Contract Until 2026
Buoyed by recent speculation regarding Mateu Alemany, it appears Barcelona are already taking steps to ensure the long-term future of the Spaniard at Camp Nou.
Indeed, according to Gerard Romero, Barça have offered Alemany a contract renewal offer. His current deal at Camp Nou expires in 2024, but the newly proposed deal could keep him at the club until 2026.
This report comes against the backdrop of widespread speculations that suggest Alemany has made a U-turn on his decision to quit Barcelona and join Aston Villa next season, in order to work with former Villarreal manager Unai Emery.
Alemany has reportedly found out that the project that was sold to him by AVFC is not nearly as promising, after visiting Birmingham. Therefore, he has opted to change his decision and has since offered himself to stay in Barcelona.
The 60-year-old had been serving as the sporting director of Barcelona since 2021, playing a key role in the acquisition of some of the star players including Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski and Jules Kounde, among others.
Alemany’s negotiation skills, coupled with his vast knowledge of law and economy had made him an asset at Barça. So quite naturally, the Blaugrana management was dealt with shockwaves when he announced his decision to quit the board earlier in the month.
Fortunately for the club, Alemany seems to have had a change of heart. And it appears Barcelona are looking to capitalise on the moment by offering him a new contract that could ensure his stay at Camp Nou till 2026.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has already accepted his decision to continue at the club, so the Spaniard will remain part of the board in the coming summer. Whether or not he will continue beyond 2024, though, remains to be seen.
