He graduated from West Virginia University after playing for the Mountaineers and attending Bishop Hendricken High School.

All four years, Mazzulla made it to the NCAA Tournament and was selected to the Big East Academic All-Star Team three times.

Mazzulla began coaching at Fairmont State University, where he was appointed head coach in 2021. He is renowned for his love of the sport and aptitude for molding players.

Joe’s father Dan was a basketball player and a coach. After graduating from Bryant University, he played professional basketball in Chile for five years.

From 2006 through 2011, Mazzulla served as the University of West Virginia’s backup guard. He redshirted in 2008-09, but he was a junior captain for the 2009-10 season and led the Mountaineers to the Final Four.

As a senior in 2010–2011, he averaged 7.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game.

Before accepting a position as an assistant with Division II Fairmont State in 2013, he attended the Division II institution for two seasons.

Mazzulla joined the Maine Red Claws, Boston’s G-League affiliate, as an assistant coach in 2016.

He returned to Fairmont State to take over as its head coach the following season. Between 2017 and 2019, he guided the Fighting Falcons to an overall 43-17.

In 2019, the Celtics employed Mazzulla as an assistant coach. Before Brad Stevens succeeded Danny Ainge as president of basketball operations in 2021, he was on Stevens’ staff for two seasons.

He was named the head coach for the Team Giannis for the 2023 NBA All-star Game on January 30, 2023.

The Celtics officially named him the head coach and signed him to an extension on February 16.
