Hansi Flick Confirms Marc-André Ter Stegen Will Start For Germany
Speaking during Germany’s press conference today, coach Hansi Flick confirms Marc-André ter Stegen will start in both friendlies for Germany.
When asked about the goalkeeping situation Flick said: “Marc will play these two games. I’ve always said that the performance principle applies. Manuel knows that too. We have a lot of quality in the goalkeeping position”
Flick also spoke on the quality and differences between ter Stegen and the injured Manuel Neuer: “Marc has shown at Barcelona over the last few years that he’s a fantastic footballer, he can command the space behind the backline and he’s very good with the ball when in possession, so it doesn’t make a big difference”
The Barcelona goalkeeper last started for Germany in their 3-3 draw with England during the UEFA Nations League last summer. The injury to Manuel Neuer has opened the door for another goalkeeper to stake their claim as Germany’s new number one as the 36-year-old’s performances in Qatar highlighted that it may be time for a refresh for Germany.
With Germany holding the European Championships next year these friendlies are crucial for the goalkeepers to show that they can perform as the nation’s number one with it being unknown the state Neuer will be in when he returns from his broken leg.
The other goalkeepers included in Germany’s squad for their friendlies against Peru and Belgium are Kevin Trapp and Bernd Leno.
