Joan Laporta Talks Ahead Of Espanyol Vs Barcelona: “Good To Win The League There”
Joan Laporta has been one of Barcelona’s most open and transparent presidents for a long time. Be it pitch side, in the media room or the dressing room, he has not held back in expressing his opinion and his love for the club.
With Barcelona being on the cusp of a sensational league title, Laporta spoke to the media in a recent event. He went on to address a plethora of topics including La Liga, the Montjuic stadium and the club’s economic situation.
The club president first highlighted the dire economic situation FC Barcelona was reeling under when he took over as the president. While the Catalans are far from complete recovery financially, Laporta spoke of the importance of taking steps only in the forward direction.
“We’re working on saving the club from economic chaos. We must be careful not to return to the situation we inherited.”
Barcelona can win the La Liga crown on Sunday night with what would be a sweet win at Cornella against Espanyol. The Spanish businessman made a cheeky comment about the possibility of winning it all against their local rivals, saying,
“I hope that Sunday will be a joy and that we can celebrate the League. It would be very good if we won the League there this weekend and you know why.”
The president then reassured fans about the structure of the Catalan institution. Amidst the whispers of a possible sale of the club to save the economic situation, Laporta assured fans that Barcelona will always be a club owned and run by members.
“You can calm down. This club will always be owned by the members, it won’t be sold. We are receiving fierce attacks from people that don’t like us, but I don’t believe in those messages that make us look bad.”
Finally, he commented on the upcoming Espai Barça project, as a part of which the team will play next season at the Montjuic. He asked for the support of fans and insisted that the reward on the other side would be worth the investment.
“Next year we will have works at home and we will have to go somewhere else but it will be temporary. We will have to make some sacrifices, but we are about to fulfil one of the dreams of Barcelona, which is a new stadium, which will be the best in the world.”
