Lamine Yamal is the talk of the town in La Liga after his debut for FC Barcelona, as he became the youngest-ever player to feature for the club when he came on as a substitute against Real Betis this past Saturday.
Regarded as one of the best prospects to be coming through the club’s academy ranks, Yamal had been regularly training with the first-team squad despite being just 15 years old this season and was finally handed his debut by Xavi on Saturday night.
A wide forward by trade, Yamal will be turning 16 years old in July later this year, at which point he can sign his first professional contract. Several clubs have been monitoring the situation in hope to lure him away from Spotify Camp Nou.
But, according to Luis F Rojo of MARCA, Yamal has already agreed to renew his contract with Barcelona as he wants to stay at the club. Both parties involved are now working on the documentation for his new deal, which he will be signing once he turns 16.
This development comes amid some concern within a few sections of Barça supporters as it had been reported that Yamal could be swooped away by Real Madrid. The 15-year-old’s father is said to be a Madrid supporter and it had been claimed that he could cause problems in his renewal.
But that does not appear to be the case as Yamal has now reportedly given his ‘yes’ to renew with Barcelona.
Talks with his agent Jorge Mendes are progressing well and both parties are now working towards finalising the details of the contract before he puts pen to paper, with the club keen to close the deal at the earliest possible.
Earlier today in his press conference, Xavi spoke about Yamal’s contract situation and said: “It’s going well, it’s under control. He’s got his mind here, he’s not thinking about anything other than succeeding here.”
Some reports have even gone on to claim that the terms of the deal have also been agreed between the two parties. All in all, Yamal’s continuity seems to have been taken care of by the club.
