Moore Helped Her Huband To Be Free From Jail
Maya’s now husband Jonathan was accused of breaking into a home in a St. Louis suburb and using a gun to threaten the homeowner.
However, there was no solid evidence like witnesses, fingerprints, DNA, or blood to link Mr. Irons to the crime.
Even without any proper, Jonathan was given a 50-year sentence for a crime when he was 16.
Maya Moore met Jonathan Irons when she was just 18 through a prison program where she was helping out.
Jonathan had already spent over ten years in prison when he first met Maya.
Their friendship grew into something deeper over the past 13 years. She finally decided to give justice to Jonathan.
Moore took time away from her professional basketball career to seek justice for Jonathan, a wrongfully imprisoned man.
The trial was challenging, with an all-white jury deciding his fate. After a long effort by Moore and others who supported them, a judge finally overturned his conviction in March 2020.
The judge found issues with how his case was handled, including important evidence not being adequately considered.
Maya Is Actively Involved In Social-Action Campaign
After announcing her official retirement from her basketball career, Moore these days is actively working for people like her husband who are falsely accused of crimes that haven’t even been done through her social-action campaign, Win With Justice.
On the other hand, Irons is still getting used to life outside of prison and is dedicated to assisting his wife in her campaign.
Last year, ESPN aired a “30 for 30” documentary called “Breakaway,” which showcases the amazing story of a couple’s love and commitment to fighting for justice.
They also recently published a memoir called Love & Justice, where they share their inspiring journey of overcoming obstacles and staying dedicated to their cause.
