In 2019, Maya Moore took a break from her basketball career to support a friend, now husband, Jonathan Irons, in his legal battle for freedom.

Through her efforts, Irons’ 50-year prison sentence was successfully overturned in 2020.

After his release, Moore and Irons tied the knot and welcomed their first child, a son named Jonathan Jr.

Maya April Moore, a retired American professional basketball player, was recognized by Sports Illustrated as the greatest winner in the history of women’s basketball due to her remarkable achievements on the court.

Born on June 11, 1989, Maya had a successful basketball collegiate career at the University of Connecticut.

Impressed by her performance, the Minnesota Lynx selected her as the first overall pick in the 2011 WNBA draft.

After a successful eight-season career, the four-time WNBA Champion retired from her basketball career in 2023.

On September 16, 2020, Moore shared a lovely picture of them and wrote, “Grateful to announce this new chapter of life! What a miracle”.

Two years later, the couple welcomed their first child Jonathan Jr. on July 5, 2022.

Moore Helped Her Huband To Be Free From Jail

Maya’s now husband Jonathan was accused of breaking into a home in a St. Louis suburb and using a gun to threaten the homeowner.

However, there was no solid evidence like witnesses, fingerprints, DNA, or blood to link Mr. Irons to the crime.

Even without any proper, Jonathan was given a 50-year sentence for a crime when he was 16.

Maya Moore met Jonathan Irons when she was just 18 through a prison program where she was helping out.

Jonathan had already spent over ten years in prison when he first met Maya.

Their friendship grew into something deeper over the past 13 years. She finally decided to give justice to Jonathan.

Moore took time away from her professional basketball career to seek justice for Jonathan, a wrongfully imprisoned man.

The trial was challenging, with an all-white jury deciding his fate. After a long effort by Moore and others who supported them, a judge finally overturned his conviction in March 2020.

The judge found issues with how his case was handled, including important evidence not being adequately considered.

Maya Is Actively Involved In Social-Action Campaign

After announcing her official retirement from her basketball career, Moore these days is actively working for people like her husband who are falsely accused of crimes that haven’t even been done through her social-action campaign, Win With Justice.

On the other hand, Irons is still getting used to life outside of prison and is dedicated to assisting his wife in her campaign.

Last year, ESPN aired a “30 for 30” documentary called “Breakaway,” which showcases the amazing story of a couple’s love and commitment to fighting for justice.

They also recently published a memoir called Love & Justice, where they share their inspiring journey of overcoming obstacles and staying dedicated to their cause.
