Memphis Depay Reaveals Disappointment With Netherlands Teammate Frenkie De Jong
Atletico Madrid forward Memphis Depay has revealed his disappointment with teammate Frenkie de Jong, who will miss the Netherlands’ upcoming ties with France and Malta.
Following El Clasico, it was revealed had a minor muscle strain, and would not be travelling with the Netherlands during the international break. Despite the fact there is nearly a third of the season left, de Jong is closing in rapidly on 2,000 minutes this season with Barcelona alone.
Speaking to Cadena NOS (via MD) though, Memphis was not impressed with the fact he was not with the Dutch squad.
“It bothers that Frenkie de Jong is not here. For me, for the coach, for the entire squad and for the country. He is one of our key players.”
“I called him, it’s not a big injury and he’ll recover quickly. I am close to Frenkie and I am disappointed.”
The two of course shared a dressing room at Barcelona as recently as January. The Netherlands are back under the tutelage of Ronald Koeman again, who managed both of them at Camp Nou. De Jong is set to be fit for Barcelona’s return to action against Elche on the first of April.
