Nine Killed And Others Injured In Stampede At El Salvador Football Stadium
Nine people have reportedly been killed and several others injured after a stampede at a football stadium in El Salvador.
The unfortunate incident occurred at the Monumental stadium in Cuscatlan which was hosting a quarterfinal match in the Salvadoran league between clubs Alianza and FAS.
It is said that the chaos ensued when fans pushed through one of the access gates at the stadium.
FAS and Alianza are two of the most successful football teams in El Salvador, with the former winning a record nineteen national league titles while the latter 16 championships.
The National Civil Police confirmed on Twitter that nine people have died after the stampede. The injured supporters are being taken to nearby hospitals, with two of them said to be in critical condition.
The country’s health minister Francisco Alabi said that emergency teams had been deployed and around 90 people are currently being treated for injuries at local hospitals.
Meanwhile, President Nayib Bukele vowed that an exhaustive investigation would be carried out to identify the culprits and punish them.
Visuals shared by the National Civil Police showed several ambulances parked outside the monumental stadium and medics rushing to the scene.
