Raphael Varane Will Have Late Fitness Test Before Trip To Anfield
Manchester United defender Raphael Varane will have a fitness test ahead of Sunday afternoon’s trip to Liverpool. This puts Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof on standby to feature at Anfield.
Varane has been suffering with leg pain and he will be assessed after breakfast.
The Frenchman has been a mainstay in United’s defence and hasn’t suffered as many injuries as last season, but that doesn’t take away from the problem that is created by him missing out.
Both Maguire and Lindelof are big downgrades and that is something Erik ten Hag may want to address in the summer. The pair started in the midweek FA Cup win at home to West Ham, but they’ve only both started 5 Premier League games this season.
When it comes to the manager he will be hoping Varane can pass a late fitness test because United haven’t won at Anfield since 2016, and that must change.
Varane recently retired from international football which means he is prioritising his club career for now.
“I gave up everything, physically and mentally,” Varane told Canal+. “But the very highest level is like a washing machine, you play all the time and you never stop.
“We have overloaded schedules and play non-stop. Right now, I feel like I’m suffocating and that [Varane] the player is gobbling up [Varane] the man.”
Fingers crossed it’s nothing serious and Varane can make the trip to Anfield! He would be a big loss in our defence.
