Real Madrid Legend Iker Casillas Picks Ter Stengen Over Thibaut Courtois On Current Form
Former Real Madrid captain and club legend Iker Casillas has chosen Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen over Thibaut Courtois based on their current form.
Ter Stegen has enjoyed a brilliant 2022/23 campaign thus far, having already managed to keep a whopping 19 clean sheets from 26 La Liga matches.
The German international has let in just nine goals this term, showing dramatic improvements after a couple of seasons during which he looked slightly off-colour.
His performances have been critical in Barça sitting atop the La Liga standings, as acknowledged by Courtois himself in a recent interview.
“This year Barça have a very good defensive base and the few chances they do concede are saved by Ter Stegen. They have been winning many games 1-0 and if it wasn’t for him they would have ended in a draw,” he had said.
Now, Casillas, one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, put his club allegiances aside and picked Ter Stegen over Courtois, saying: “He is playing better right now.”
However, when it came to other choices, the former Spain international showed his loyalty to Real Madrid as he chose Karim Benzema over Robert Lewandowski, Eder Militao over Ronald Araujo, Luka Modric over Pedri and Carlo Ancelotti over Xavi Hernandez.
While Casillas may prefer Xavi, the Barcelona manager has got his Real Madrid counterpart’s number, having won three of the four meetings between them, with the latest one coming last night.
Indeed, Barcelona and Real Madrid dueled in a feisty El Clasico on Sunday, with the Blaugrana coming out on top and extending their advantage over their arch-rivals to 12 points.
As for Ter Stegen, the former Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper looks a lock-in to win the Zamora Trophy this season.
