There has been a lot of noise over the future of Lionel Messi lately. The Argentine international’s current deal at PSG expires at the end of the season, but with Barcelona keen on bringing him back to Camp Nou, his fate remains uncertain.
Sources across Europe suggest that Messi is favouring a prolonged stay at Parc des Princes and may even sign a contract extension that will seal his future at the club at least until 2024.
However, a recent report from Diario AS has once again fueled speculation over Messi’s potential move to Camp Nou, suggesting that the two parties are, in fact, in talks over the attacker’s move to Catalonia in June.
This comes just a day after PSG teased Messi’s extension by announcing an interview with the Argentine. However, the interview happened to be about Messi’s plaudits during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, along with his thoughts before the Champions League tie against Bayern Munich.
Barcelona, therefore, not out of the chase just yet. They are, in fact, keen on bringing the 35-year-old back to Catalonia, as part of Xavi’s plans to further reinforce the attacking unit.
Barça have had immense success with the acquisition of Robert Lewandowski last summer. In addition, the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Gavi have made a solid impression. Messi, to that end, could add more punch in the Barcelona frontline, effectively making the Catalans one of the most feared attacking teams in Europe.
Messi’s experience, coupled with his pedigree at the highest level of football, could be just what Barcelona need in order to break their rut in European football. The Blaugrana have indeed fared well in Europe lately, having been knocked out of the UCL group stages for the past two seasons in a row.
That said, luring Messi to Barcelona could still be a tricky affair. The attacker has a dysfunctional relationship with the club following his controversial exit 2021. In addition, the club are suffering an economic crisis and may not be able to offer Messi a lucrative contract.
Hence, it is always easier for the Argentine to continue his spell at PSG, where he is more likely to receive a hefty contract.
