Ter Stegen Explains How Xavi Has Changed Barcelona: “MENTALITY OF THE TEAM”
Barcelona were in a state of disarray when Xavi Hernandez was appointed the head coach at the end of 2020, replacing Ronald Koeman. The former midfielder, who had been coaching Al Sadd in Qatar, had a monumental task of bringing former glory back to Barça.
Fast forward to early 2021, Xavi might not have achieved the task just yet. But he has helped Barcelona come a long way and form a solid foundation for the future, even without the services of Lionel Messi.
In a recent interview, Marc-Andre ter Stegen offered his thoughts on Xavi’s leadership during his time at Barcelona so far. He praised the Spaniard for changing the mentality of the team and how they approach matches.
“The work that Xavi is doing, who has made many changes in the mentality of the team, is helping to win games that are complicated,” ter Stegen told Diario SPORT.
Ter Stegen has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of Xavi’s leadership at Barça. From being criticised for his performances and lack of consistency, the German has become one of the best-performing goalkeepers in La Liga this season.
His performances have been critical in helping Barcelona remain at the top of the league with a handsome eight-point lead over Real Madrid.
However, the goalkeeper is not taking anything for granted. “We have a small advantage, but there is a lot left,” he said when asked about Barcelona’s lead in the league table. Ter Stegen’s comments are certainly a testament to the mentality Xavi has brought to the team.
And given how well he has performed this season, coupled with his wealth of experience, one would expect him to become Barcelona’s biggest leaders once players such as Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets leave the club.
