Thomas Meunier has informed Borussia Dortmund that he wants to leave in the summer amidst interest from FC Barcelona. The Belgian international wants the German outfit to sanction an exit and is waiting for a call from the Blaugrana.
Meunier has been on Barcelona’s agenda since the January transfer window of last year. At that time, club director Jordi Cruyff called the former PSG ace and spoke to him about a move. While he was excited about the transfer, Dortmund blocked the exit.
Talking about what went down, Meunier had said: “They were looking for a proven full-back, a physically strong, complete player, and for an acceptable price, given their financial situation. Dortmund called me about the offer but told me: ‘I’m sorry, you can’t leave.’”
However, Barcelona have continued to hold an interest in Meunier. And, as per the report, the Belgian international remains intent on joining the La Liga leaders as well.
To that end, he has informed Borussia Dortmund that he wants to leave and is waiting for an approach from Barcelona.
The Blaugrana, for their part, are aware of this development but are yet to make any move to try and sign Meunier.
This is because they are yet to decide whether signing a new right-back should be a priority or not, due to the club’s Financial Fair Play situation and the need to strengthen other positions.
Meunier’s contract with Borussia Dortmund expires in the summer of 2024 and his transfer is unlikely to be very expensive. However, some coaches at Barcelona are concerned about his age, given that he will be turning 32 in September later this year.
So, it remains to be seen if Barça do decide to make a move for Meunier or wait for other alternatives, or instead continue to bank on Jules Kounde at right-back for next season as well.
