‘We Are Delighted With The Win’ – Graham Potter Praises ‘Important’ Win Over Leeds
Chelsea manager Graham Potter was left delighted with his struggling side’s 1-0 win over relegation-threatened Leeds United on Saturday evening.
Wesley Fofana’s second-half header was enough for the Blues to end their wretched run of form, picking up their first maximum points since mid-January.
The victory comes as a missive relief for the under-fire English manager who is not out of the woods yet. However, he can hope his side builds off the win to turn their fortunes around.
“We’re delighted with the win, that’s for sure because we’ve had a tough period,” Potter told reporters (via Chelseafc.com). “I’m delighted for the players, delighted for the supporters, because they’ve had to suffer, so it was pleasing to get the win.”
Chelsea began the game on the front foot. Kai Havertz drew a smart save from Illan Meslier after being played through by Raheem Sterling before Joao Felix smashed the crossbar with his side-footed shot.
After grabbing the opener, the Blues immediately switched to game management which is understandable considering they were desperate for the three points.
“We started the game well and created some opportunities,” Potter added.
“Playing against Leeds is always tough, they’ve got a high intensity. At the end, it’s really good for the players to keep a clean sheet, get a win, and to have that feeling. It’s nice.”
Fofana’s header may have halted Chelsea’s abysmal losing run, but Potter’s future is still up in the air despite continued backing from the club owners.
The Blues will now switch their attention to their crunch Champions League round of 16 tie decider against Borussia Dortmund at Stamford Bridge.
“It’s been a tough period for us all, but it’s nice to go home with the win,” Potter continued.
“Now we need to prepare for a really exciting game on Tuesday night, which I’m sure will be a fantastic atmosphere and occasion, and we want to try and win it.”
A top-four finish is far-fetched for the Blues at this point in the season – so is winning the Champions League.
However, a win over Dortmund on Tuesday night might give the doubting Blues faithful something to hold on to as the Potter regime rumbles on.
