Uruguayan-Born Star Gaston Sirino Makes Decision On Representing Bafana Bafana

Bafana Bafana are on a high at the moment, having recently qualified for the 2023 AFCON, but coach Hugo Broos maintains he is still on the lookout for better players.

One of the players that has been in question for a while when it comes to Bafana Bafana is Uruguayan-born star Gaston Sirino.

The Mamelodi Sundowns playmaker came to the country in 2018, putting pen to paper for the Brazilians amid much fanfare. In his five years in the country, he has often entertained not only the fans of the DStv Premiership defending champions, but also that of South Africans at large. Now with five-years having past of Sirino being in the country, the calls to have naturalised as a Mzansi citizens straight away, in order too make him eligible to be picked by Broos for Bafana Bafana.

Having said that, however, there have still been very little conversations about Sirino being considered for Bafana Bafana, but now the player has finally taken it upon himself to break the silence regarding this situation and reveal his stance in the process.

SIRINO BREAKS SILENCE ON BAFANA BAFANA

“I have had a great time in this beautiful country, love everything about it and if I get presented with the chance to don the national team colors I would jump at the opportunity, but the decision does not rest with me. There is no player born in South America who has played for Bafana Bafana and if I receive the call, I would be happy to represent this beautiful nation.” Sirino told Sundowns Magazine after being quizzed on the prospect of turning out for South Africa.

Another potential sticking point for Sirino could be his age. Bafana coach Broos has often been vocal about dropping the average age of his squad, and with the player being 32-years-old, he might not be fancied. But since signing for Sundowns he has won eight trophies, scoring 36 goals and registering 41 assists in 169 games for his club, he could be too enticing to ignore at international level.
