Wout Weghorst Reveals He’s An Assest To Manchester United
Reports suggest Manchester United won’t try to keep Wout Weghorst beyond this season, although the Netherlands striker remains hopeful of staying at Old Trafford.
Weghorst has only managed to score two goals since arriving at Manchester United on loan from Burnley in January.
The 30-year-old has yet to score in the Premier League for the Reds.
Burnley are expecting Weghorst to return in the summer, however, nobody knows for how long.
The man himself insists that a concrete decision about his future was yet to be communicated to him.
It would appear he’s been left out in the dark.
Speaking at the London Stadium on Sunday, The Times Weghorst told that United were very satisfied with him.
“In those [talks] the club said they are very satisfied with me. It has absolutely not been communicated with me that Man United don’t want me to continue,” Weghorst said.
“They appreciate my value. They believe I am absolutely an asset for the team. Of course I have heard different things [in the media]. I have to wait and see what happens and focus on our goals in the league and cup competitions.”
The Netherlands international has lost his place in Erik ten Hag’s team in recent weeks, starting just one of the last seven games in the Premier League.
Weghorst adds that he would want assurances over game time, should he agree to stay at United.
“I’m a guy who likes to play football,” he said. “When your appearances are reduced, as has been the case lately, you realise what you are missing. If the club wants to keep me, I’ll have to know what role they have in mind for me.”
It’s pretty telling that Ten Hag’s priority target this summer will be a centre-forward. Weghorst would get less game time if he is to stick around next season.
I can’t see that happening because Weghorst has not done enough to warrant a permanent deal.
