Xavi Confident Robert Lewandowski Will Recapture Barcelona Scoring Form
Barcelona coach Xavi has downplayed concerns about Robert Lewandowski’s recent goal-scoring struggles.
The Polish forward, who arrived from Bayern Munich last summer, has netted 27 goals and made seven assists in 38 appearances in total for the Catalan giants.
Despite Lewandowski failing to score in Barcelona’s last four matches in all competitions against Girona, Getafe, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, Xavi has no concerns about the player’s form.
“Robert was successful in a large part of the season, now not so much, but the goals will come. All forwards want to score. Those who don’t score are sad, it’s the life of a forward,” Xavi told reporters after Barcelona’s recent 1-0 win over Atletico.
Lewandowski, who is still the La Liga’s top scorer with 17 goals, has only scored twice in his last seven league outings, with most of his goals coming in the first half of the campaign.
However, Xavi believes that his other players can also step up to score goals, and they should not rely solely on the veteran striker.
“Imagine how the others will be when Lewandowski, who is the top scorer in the league, starts scoring again. We need to continue to work and create chances,” Xavi added.
The Barcelona coach was also pleased with the team’s recent 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid, which helped them to maintain their lead at the top of the table. Ferran Torres scored the only goal of the game, and Xavi praised his team’s overall performance, although he admitted that they could have scored more goals to secure a more comfortable victory.
“It’s a very important victory. It was key to our goal of winning the league. We beat a great team. They had chances, but we dominated and we had to score the second goal that would have given us peace of mind. But it’s a constant in this League. We have been superior.”
