Barcelona Manager Xavi Rule Out The Summer Sale Of Andreas Christensen

Given the Financial Fair Play situation at FC Barcelona, there is a possibility that the club could be forced into selling some players this summer – mostly stars who are not a major part of Xavi Hernandez’s plans and some who are an essential cog in the setup.

The name of last summer’s signing Andreas Christensen had been doing the rounds as a possible departee, amidst reported interest from Newcastle United.

However, according to Ferran Correas of SPORT, Barcelona manager Xavi has ruled out the possibility of selling Christensen this summer.

The Danish international arrived at Spotify Camp Nou last year, joining on a free transfer after his contract with Chelsea had run out.

While he has missed a good chunk of matches due to injury, Christensen has been rock solid when fit and available and has become a player that Xavi relies on heavily.

Indeed, as per the report, the manager believes that since the former Chelsea star’s arrival, the Barça defensive unit has taken a big leap in quality.

Christensen has impressed with his game-reading abilities, positioning, and his quality with the ball at his feet. All these aspects have convinced Xavi that the defender needs to stay at the club despite the potential arrival of another centre-back in the form of Inigo Martinez.

Christensen, who turned 27 earlier this month, has played 25 matches for Barcelona in his debut season, and has played an important role in their exceptional defensive record while also chipping in with an assist.

The defender picked up an injury on international duty last month but has resumed full training this week and is expected to be available to face Real Betis tomorrow.
