Australia all-rounder Cameron Green scored a century as he produced his side’s main resistance on the opening day of the first Test in New Zealand.
The 24-year-old brought up his second Test ton off the penultimate ball of the day and was 103 not out at the close of play in Wellington.
Matt Henry was the pick of New Zealand’s bowlers with figures of 4-43.
“It obviously feels pretty good. It was a pretty tough wicket out there,” said Green.
“I thought the boys played pretty well,” added Green, who scored 16 fours.
“It was nice to kind of stick out there and hopefully put a semi-competitive total on the board.”
New Zealand captain Tim Southee won the toss and elected to field at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.
Henry broke the opening partnership with the score on 61 when he had Steve Smith caught behind by wicketkeeper Tom Blundell and Australia regularly lost wickets.
“That was a hell of a knock from Cam Green, but in general, we did a good job,” said Henry.
“Hopefully tomorrow morning we can finish the job.
“We created enough pressure for a long period of time, but it’s Test cricket and can change just like that.”
