Former England defender retires from playing football

Former England centre-back Phil Jagielka has retired from football at the age of 41.

Jagielka played 40 times for England was included in the squads for Euro 2012 and the 2014 World Cup.

He began his professional career with Sheffield United in 2000 and went on to spend 12 years at Everton before a second spell at Bramall Lane.

He then played for Derby County and Stoke City, who released him at the end of last season.

“All good things come to an end and after just over 800 appearances my playing career is done,” Jagielka said on social media.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would get to play football at the highest level for some amazing clubs as well as my country.

“It’s been an absolute honour to step onto the grass for every match and I have so many people to thank for that.”
