HOW MANY GAMES ARE IN A PREMIER LEAGUE SEASON?

The Premier League is the most watched division in world football, with fans flocking from all corners to view the chaos and quality.

With that comes an appetite for matches and supporters have plenty to truck through during the course of the season.

Here’s how many games take place in a regular Premier League season.

How many games are in a Premier League season?

With 20 teams in the Premier League, each team ends the season having played 38 games. 19 are played at home and the other half are away fixtures.

In total, 380 Premier League matches are played each season. Broadcast rights holders Sky Sports, BT Sport and Amazon Prime Video then pick games to show live over the course of the season, with the selections announced every month of the campaign.

How are Premier League fixtures decided?

The process starts when the Premier League sends its playing dates to Atos, an international IT services company that has helped the division produce fixtures lists for 30 years.

International dates from FIFA, European competition fixtures and the Football Association take up the calendar, with the remaining dates available for league and Carabao Cup matches.

In March, the Premier League sends clubs a form with questions such as whether there are dates a team wish to play away from home.

Once teams are decided, each club is placed in a pairing grid which defines the dates they will play at home. The fixture computer knows which clubs are at home and who play away, then mixes the data randomly to make the schedule.

A club never starts or finishes a season with two home or two away matches, as it would be unfair for a team to finish the campaign with two consecutive away matches.

Travel issues are also considered, though some selections in recent years – particularly when teams play on Monday night – haven’t shown too much regard for fan travel. That is, however, also down to broadcasters and their match selections.

Clubs are also paired with other teams if they’re from the same area to prevent them from playing in the same city at the same time. Manchester City and Manchester United won’t play at home together, though in London the scheduling is more difficult because of the volume of teams.

Once the fixture list is determined, it is reviewed by the Premier League, the Football League and Atos representatives to ensure all needs have been met.

When does the Premier League start?

The 2022/23 Premier League season will begin on 5 August, a Friday night where Arsenal will visit Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

That weekend sees champions Manchester City visit West Ham, promoted Fulham host Liverpool and Manchester United take on Brighton.

The league starts a week earlier than usual to accommodate the winter World Cup in Qatar. The final game week before players are called up by their respective countries will be 12/13 November. It then resumes again in December on Boxing Day.

When does the Premier League end?

The final gameweek of the 2022/23 Premier League season will be on 28 May, with all teams playing their last games simultaneously.

That Sunday has Arsenal vs Wolves, Chelsea vs Newcastle and Leeds vs Tottenham on its schedule, with the title and relegation possibly still to be decided.
