MAN. CITY SCORES 3-0 PAST BRIGHTON AND RECLAIM THE TOP SPOT ON LEAGUE TABLE.
Manchester City’s Premier League title push continued with a 3-0 home victory over Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday evening, seeing the ‘Blues’ extend their all-time unbeaten streak against the south-coast club at home.
As expected, City dominated possession of the ball in the opening quarter of an hour. The ‘Blues’ pushed Brighton deep into their own half, but their constant probing led to nothing more than a flurry of half-chances inside 20 minutes. The mood around the Etihad Stadium was one of frustration as the home side continued to knock on the door, but struggled to carve out clear-cut scoring chances. To make matters worse for the home faithful, Brighton looked threatening in their rare forays into the City half of the pitch.
The hosts finally kicked the Brighton door down eight minutes into the second half, when a scintillating counter-attack was capped off with a Riyad Mahrez shot deflecting off Lewis Dunk and into the back of the net to open the scoring. It went from bad to worse for the ‘Seagulls’ twelve minutes later when Phil Foden’s fizzing shot from outside of the box took a deflection in the box and fired past Robert Sánchez to see the home side double their lead, and ease the tension around the stadium. Bernardo Silva side-footed home City’s third goal eight minutes from FT after some superb pressing from the home side, hammering home the final nail in Brighton’s coffin on the night.
Having never won at the Etihad Stadium before, another loss at the home of the champions will be no surprise. However, with two victories in North London last week, the ‘Seagulls’ have extended their gap over the relegation places to 15 points, putting the club’s superb progress since being promoted to the top-tier in 2017 on full display.
