Marcus Rashford pays emotional tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton

Marcus Rashford has posted an emotional message on Instagram paying tribute to Man Utd and England legend Sir Bobby Charlton.

Charlton sadly passed away on Saturday aged 86 and tributes have since been paid to one of the greatest players in both Manchester United and England’s history.

The legendary midfielder made 758 appearances for Man Utd during his career, helping the club rise from the ashes of the Munich air disaster to become European champions in 1968 under Sir Matt Busby. Charlton is also the second highest goalscorer in the club’s history, having held the record until Wayne Rooney scored his 250th goal for the Red Devils in 2017.

As well as being an iconic player for United, Charlton also spent a considerable amount of time as part of the club’s board of directors, helping shape the first-team from 1984 onwards.

A player who came through Man Utd’s youth system during Charlton’s time in that role is current star attacker Rashford. The wide forward joined the club back in 2005 and broke into the first team in 2015.

Paying tribute to Charlton on Instagram, Rashford posted an image of himself signing his first ever professional contract at the Red Devils, with Charlton standing proudly over him as he did so.

“I signed my first professional contract at Man Utd with Sir Bobby. Thank you for all the support and advice that you provided to me. That win [over Sheffield United on Saturday] was for you and your family.”

Along with Rashford, fellow Man Utd and England player Harry Maguire also paid tribute to the legendary 1966 World Cup winner after the 2-1 win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Saturday.

He said: “Sir Bobby came into the dressing room a lot and he lit the place up. He’s an absolute legend of the club. We are delighted to win the game today but this is more than football and our thoughts are with his family. We will miss him, the world will miss him.”
