Raducanu Pulls Out Of Madrid After Hand Injury, Ready To Leave Top 100

Emma Raducanu will not play at the Madrid Open after pulling out of the tournament due to an injury to her right hand. The British No. 1 was due to face world No. 73 Viktoriya Tomova on Wednesday afternoon, with the winner of the match playing world No. 1 Iga Swiatek next. Raducanu will drop out of the top 100 in the rankings for the first time since her 2021 US Open win

Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from the Madrid Open hours before her first-round match due to a hand injury.

The British No. 1 was due to face world No. 73 Viktoriya Tomova on Wednesday afternoon, with world No. 1 Iga Swiatek awaiting the winner in the second round.

However, Raducanu has pulled out of the WTA 1000 event.

“Emma Raducanu withdraws from the Mutua Madrid Open due to [an] injury in her right hand,” said a statement from the tournament.
“Get well soon!”

Raducanu, who will now drop out of the top 100 for the first time since her 2021 US Open win, had not given much away about her health during a 58-word press conference ahead of the tournament.

However, she has been battling a wrist problem over the last few months.

Speaking after losing to Bianca Andreescu at the Miami Open, Raducanu said she was considering options about the issue.

“It is something I’ve been managing for some time,” Raducanu said.

“Yeah, I just need to review after this tournament really and figure out what my next steps are. We have been managing it, keeping on top of it.

“I’m able to play in the short-term. But the current solutions aren’t very viable long-term.”

It is not known when Raducanu will return to action.

The Italian Open starts on May 8 and is followed by the French Open, which starts on May 28.

If Raducanu is ranked outside the top 100 following the Italian Open she faces the potential prospect of needing a wild card to play at Wimbledon this summer.

Raducanu’s withdrawal means there will be no British women in the main draw in Madrid.

Cameron Norrie, Andy Murray, Dan Evans and Kyle Edmund are in the men’s draw.

Murray plays Andrea Vavassori in the first round on Thursday while Edmund opens against former US Open champion Dominic Thiem.

Norrie and Evans both have first-round byes.
