Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard has been one of Barcelona’s reported transfer targets in recent months. The French International is capable of playing at both centre-back and right-back and is valued as a dynamic option for Xavi’s plans.
However, the Catalans suffered a blow in the race for his signing when the German club were said to have accelerated talks over a possible renewal with the player.
Bayern Munich would be willing to part ways with the defender this summer if he does not reciprocate interest in renewing his contract.
The 26-year-old has a contract until 2024 with the German side. With just one year left on his contract come June, he could be available for a bargain value.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta spoke to the media yesterday where he did not rule out the possibility of a right-back signing.
“We must sign a right-back, while a CB will depend on the market possibilities. A striker surely yes, but it is likely that someone will have to leave. We have a great midfield and I don’t see the need to sign someone there,” he said.
And Pavard would fit the bill, given his contract situation. However, a move would completely depend on the fee demanded by Bayern Munich.
The 26-year-old has made 20 league appearances for the Bavarians so far this season, scoring one goal and providing one assist. Further, he averages one key pass per game and 11 defensive actions per game.
Should he not show any indications about wanting to renew, Bayern would be open to selling the Frenchman in order to generate revenue. And, Barcelona will be watching the developments surrounding Pavard closely as they look to sign a new right-back.
