According to journalist Veronica Brunati, Barcelona are not prioritising a summer move for Villarreal and Argentina right-back Juan Foyth. Instead, their priority at this point is to re-sign former club captain Lionel Messi.
Messi has been heavily linked with a return to Barcelona as his contract with PSG edges closer to expiry with each passing day.
Recent reports have suggested that the Blaugrana are already studying the ways they can facilitate the return of the club legend, with plans being to make a formal contract offer in the coming days.
But the Catalan giants’ Financial Fair Play issues have created skepticism surrounding the operation.
At the same time, Barcelona also need to strengthen several other positions in the summer, with the right-back slot seen as a key area that needs improvement. To that end, a move for Villarreal right-back and Messi’s Argentina teammate Foyth was said to be a priority.
But, now, Veronica Brunati is reporting that the 25-year-old right-back is not the priority at Camp Nou right now, but it is Messi.
The journalist further indicates that Barcelona are already making efforts to balance their accounts so that they can successfully register the 35-year-old PSG superstar if he arrives.
In an earlier update, Brunati had claimed that Messi had already made his decision about returning to Barcelona and it was now up to the club to find ways to finance the operation and ensure his successful registration.
And it seems like the Blaugrana are already busy at work finding ways to ensure that Messi’s return and registration goes smoothly, with important sponsors being spoken with to fund the move.
Several Barcelona players and manager Xavi Hernandez have been vocal about Messi’s possible return to the club next summer. However, it remains to be seen if it materialises and whether it hampers the team’s bid to strengthen other areas of the pitch.
