Report: Three Reasons Why Ferran Torres Wanted To Take The Penalty Vs Valencia

Ansu Fati is going through a difficult moment in his career. Nothing seems to be working for the La Masia protege on the field as his form in front of the goal gets from bad to worse.

Many a time, a single goal can do wonders in boosting the confidence of a player in such a situation. Ansu Fati could have had that chance when Barcelona won a penalty against Valencia in the second half last night but was denied the opportunity by Ferran Torres who missed the eventual spot-kick.

According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, Torres insisted on taking the penalty last night for a host of personal reasons.

For starters, the youngster has a special history with Valencia for the Mestalla-based side is the club where he spent most of the initial years of his professional career.

Further, the last week happened to be his birthday week, which was another reason why the Spaniard wanted to step up and celebrate the occasion by scoring a goal.

On top of that, he had a number of family and friends in the stands to witness him participate. Understandably, he wished to please them with a goal from the spot.

Yet, as things panned out, the former Valencia man missed from the spot and let go of Barcelona’s best chance to double their lead.

His converting the chance, in hindsight, could have given Barcelona a bigger cushion considering Ronald Araujo’s subsequent sending-off and the hard-fought final thirty minutes.

Torres and Fati are not guaranteed starting places in the team’s next La Liga game at San Mames. With Robert Lewandowski expected to be fit for the game, one of the duo could well start on the bench.

Torres has only scored two goals for Barcelona this term in 21 La Liga appearances and has created six big chances in the process. He averages close to one key pass per game and is yet to establish himself as a regular starter.
