THE GIRO D’ITALIA- ARNAUD DEMARE GETS HAT-TRICK AS MARK CAVENDISH AND BREAKAWAY CRUELLY DENIED ON STAGE 13.

Arnaud Demare continued his fine Giro d’Italia with a third stage win of the race. He beat Phil Bauhaus and Mark Cavendish to the line after the peloton caught a four-man break with 600m to go after a thrilling game of cat-and-mouse. Earlier on the stage, pink jersey contender Romain Bardet abandoned due to illness.

Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ) beat Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain-Victorious) and Mark Cavendish (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) to the line to seal a third stage win at the Giro d’Italia after the peloton swept up a four-man break inside the final 600m.

Nicolas Prodhomme (Ag2R-Citroen), Julius van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost), Mirco Maestri (Eolo-Kometa) and Pascal Eenkhoorn (Jumbo-Visma) made their move early, and stayed out all the way until the final kilometre. But the day’s efforts eventually took their toll as the stage was settled by a brunch sprint and Demare again proved his pedigree.

Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek-Segafredo) finished safely in the pack to defend the maglia rosa, but pink jersey contender Romain Bardet (Team DSM) abandoned the Giro earlier due to illness. Bardet was in fourth, just 14 seconds off Lopez prior to Friday’s stage.

Lopez holds a 12-second lead over Richard Carapaz (Ineos) and Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates).
