David Beckham’s Inter Miami is set to earn $75,000 from Gareth Bale’s transfer to Los Angeles FC due to a new rule in the Major League Soccer called the Discovery List
Gareth Bale’s move to the Major League Soccer (MLS) to join Los Angeles FC (LAFC) has already been confirmed. The Welshman will pen a 12-month contract and becomes the latest high-profile star to move north.
Bale was set to retire from football after a hugely successful career with Real Madrid. But Wales’s qualification to the World Cup meant that he had to prolong his stay in football and look for a club where he would maintain his fitness levels.
His move to LAFC is interesting as Inter Miami are set to be paid $75,000. Inter Miami is a franchised co-owned by retired football great David Beckham. Marca reports that the MLS introduced a new rule called the Discovery List to regulate players coming from foreign leagues.
The Discovery List stipulates that should a team wish to sign a player from a foreign league in future, it sets aside a clause for him. This clause gives the team the right to talk to the player first and persuade him to join the club ahead of any other team. A club can have up to seven players in its List.
In the case of Bale, Inter Miami had this clause in place worth $75,000 and LAFC had to pay them to transfer the rights to themselves. The rule is apparently in place to safeguard against two clubs fighting for one player and increasing the set salary caps for players arriving in the United States.
