Ilkay Gundogan Agent Denies Contract Agreement With Barcelona: “Still Open”

Over the past couple of days, reports of Manchester City midfielder and captain Ilkay Gundogan reaching an agreement with Barcelona over a summer transfer have been doing the rounds.

It was claimed that the 32-year-old has an agreement in place with the Catalans over a Bosman move at the end of the season. However, it was reported that Gundogan was yet to agree to a clause that would allow him to leave on loan if Barça failed in registering him.

But, earlier today, the veteran star’s agent, Ilkay Gundogan, has denied reports of an agreement with Barcelona, stating that the German international is currently focused on Manchester City and the birth of his child.

Speaking to The Guardian (h/t Fabrizio Romano), Ilhan Gundogan said: “There’s definitely no agreement yet with any club. The focus of Ilkay in recent weeks was only on City, end of the season and the birth of his son.”

“Where Ilkay plays next season is still open,” he added.

Gundogan’s current contract with Manchester City expires at the end of the ongoing campaign. The 32-year-old is being pursued by Barcelona at the request of manager Xavi Hernandez, who seeks to reinforce his midfield in the summer.

Gundogan’s experience, versatility and availability for free are said to be key motivating factors behind the La Liga leaders’ interest in his services. His potential arrival would allow Xavi to rest and rotate players like Pedri and Frenkie de Jong more freely without a drop in quality on the pitch.

However, as Romano reported recently, it seems like the former Borussia Dortmund star is yet to decide on his next move, even though some suggested that an agreement was in the advanced stages.
